Reach for the Stars

Silver Anniversary of Reach for the Stars was GOLDEN

collageAs done in the past few years, planning for our annual career workshop began with Mary Lovell inviting speakers, Anahita Sidhwa reserving rooms at Brookhaven College, Ruth Alhilali recruiting volunteers and Julie Moore preparing lunch for the middle school counselors. Melanie Gamble provided gifts from Brookhaven College’s Geotechnology Institute while Delryn Fleming and Madaline Gonzalez placed orders for totes and gifts for the participants. Michelle Capener contacted the middle school counselors, arranged bus transportation and assured us a good crowd of 7th and 8th grade young women. It might have seemed routine, but it was certainly different.

ReachForTheStarsCollage1First, the 25th anniversary gave us a color scheme and a logo change. Silver and blue reigned in Julie’s luncheon both for the counselors and for the participants.   Second, on Mary’s financial “go-ahead,” Delryn and Madaline found extra special gifts from branch funds to thank our presenters and “wow” our participants. Third, Melanie Gamble observed closely every move of this well orchestrated team as she prepares to take the leadership of RFTS in 2015. And finally, we have some valuable data about our event: “Since 1991 over 4,000 students from CFBISD have attended these conferences and we have records to indicate that about 55% of them came back to Brookhaven College to take credit classes.”

ReachForTheStarsCollage2In addition to those mentioned, we appreciate the efforts of these AAUW members who helped in this special event:

Claire Bambrough for Ice Cream Engineering workshop
Peggy Mason, Doris Rousey, Pris Mowinkel, Evonne Clark, Jane Ingebritson, Betty Bourgeois, Rebecca Britt, Carol Dingman, Leslie Jackson, Julie Nisula, and Nancy Watten

Such a special event takes great teamwork. Thanks to all of you.
